Wictra Holdings commenced business in 1996 when Wictra CC was established. At the time the vision was to provide the railway industry with an alternative local source of railway engineering expertise. Focusing on consultancy, various projects were executed in South Africa, Germany and Thailand.
It soon became evident that the South African Railway Industry seriously lacked competition in the refurbishing of the rolling stock market segment. Repair procedures applied and materials used had virtually remained the same for over 20 years. In 1996 Wictra CC entered the refurbishment arena and successfully repaired 3 5M2A motor coaches and 8 plain trailer coaches during the first year for the then SARCC (SA Rail Commuter Corporation) now PRASA.
Realizing the inherent limitation of a Closed Corporation when contemplating joint ventures with other companies or groups, Wictra Holdings (Pty) Ltd was founded in 2000 to reach new horizons in the new millennium. Wictra Holdings' vision was to become the first, largest and most successful black economic empowered rolling stock refurbishing company in South Africa. Railway engineering was, and has remained one of the least accessible industries for black entrepreneurs.
A serious search for suitable black partners over many months culminated in the formation of Wictra Holdings (Pty) Ltd as a fully fledged black economic empowered company on 1 March 2002. Omega Scientific Research (Pty) Ltd (a 100% BEE company) obtained 50% shareholding in Wictra Holdings (Pty) Ltd and Wictra CC was incorporated at the same time. A formidable BEE railway engineering company had emerged to provide Southern Africa with the expertise and facilities to deliver highest quality refurbished rolling stock. Wictra Holdings (Pty) Ltd have repair facilities in both Cape Town (Brackenfell) and Boksburg (Dunswart). SABS ISO 9002 quality listings have also been achieved for both Cape Town and Boksburg. These facilities are fully equipped with sand blasting and spray booths which accommodate a full coach; fully equipped bogie overhaul and electronic equipment repair and testing facilities.
The company has repaired in excess of 1400 motor coaches and plain trailer coaches for the PRASA (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa). Its 400 employees arguably have the highest combined railway engineering expertise in the industry and are well equipped to deal with any challenge. Wictra Holdings has recently achieved the full refurbishment of all Shosholoza Meyl type coaches. These include, Kitchen Cars, Dining Cars, Sleepers, Sitters and Baggage Vans. A vast number of rebuilds (fully manufactured coaches) have also been produced & delivered into service recently. Further repairs include numerous locomotives, rail inspection cars and general repairs.
